❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common lawn care calculator questions.

Measure your lawn in sq ft (length × width), then multiply by the seeding rate for your grass type per 1,000 sq ft. For example: a 5,000 sq ft lawn with Tall Fescue at 8 lbs/1,000 sq ft needs 40 lbs of seed for a new lawn.
Apply no more than 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application. For a 20-0-10 fertilizer, that means 5 lbs of product per 1,000 sq ft. Our fertilizer calculator does this math for any NPK ratio automatically.
One pallet of sod covers approximately 450–500 sq ft. Divide your lawn area by 450 and add 10% for waste. For a 5,000 sq ft lawn: 5,000 ÷ 450 = 11.1 + 10% waste = 12 pallets. Our sod calculator handles this automatically.
DIY fertilization costs $50–$150/year for a medium lawn (materials only). Professional fertilization programs cost $200–$600/year for 4–6 applications depending on lawn size and region.
Most lawns need 1–1.5 inches of water per week. Water deeply 2–3 times per week rather than shallow daily watering. The best time to water is early morning (5–9 AM) to reduce evaporation and disease risk.
Cool-season grasses: late August to mid-September is ideal — the soil is warm, air temperatures are cooler, and rain is more frequent. Warm-season grasses: late spring when soil is above 65°F. Always aerate before overseeding for best results.
Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a single mowing. If your grass should be 3 inches tall, mow when it reaches 4.5 inches. Cutting more stresses the grass, exposes the soil, and encourages weeds.
Yes — aerating before overseeding improves seed-to-soil contact by 50–80%, dramatically improving germination rates. Core aeration removes plugs of soil, creating holes that catch seed, reduce compaction, and improve water infiltration.
