For a standard lawn topdressing, apply 1/4 to 1/2 inch of compost, which equals 0.77 to 1.54 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet. A light application (1/4 in) is ideal for healthy, established lawns before overseeding. A medium application (1/2 in) is the most common rate for annual maintenance topdressing. Heavy applications (1 inch) are reserved for lawn renovation, compaction relief, or poor soils.
Bulk compost costs $25 to $50 per cubic yard delivered. Bagged compost runs $5โ$8 per 1 cu ft bag or $8โ$12 per 2 cu ft bag. For lawns over 2,000 sq ft, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper. A 5,000 sq ft lawn at 1/2 inch depth requires about 7.7 cubic yards of compost โ roughly $200โ$400 in bulk or $400โ$600 in bags.
The formula is simple: Cubic yards = (Area sq ft ร Depth inches) รท 324. The number 324 comes from converting 1 cubic yard (27 cubic feet) into square feet at 1 inch deep โ 27 ร 12 = 324. Our calculator handles this automatically including waste buffers.
Apply compost immediately after core aeration for maximum benefit. Compost falls into the aeration holes, directly improving root zone soil structure and microbial activity. This combination is the single best annual lawn improvement practice โ far more effective than compost alone on an un-aerated lawn.
Never apply more than 1 inch of compost in a single application. Thick layers block light and air from grass blades, causing smothering and disease. If your lawn needs heavy amendment, split applications over two seasons. Always use screened, fine-grade compost โ chunky material sits on top rather than settling to soil level.
